Grace offers a variety of ways for students in grades 5-8 to participate in athletics. Students who wish to play pay a flat $50 sports fee that covers all sports for the year. Girls on the Run begins in grade 3 and to join, students pay a separate $35 registration fee directly to the GOTR organization.
Volleyball
Girls and boys in grades 5-6 and 7-8 are invited to play volleyball. The season runs during September and October and is open to all skill levels. Students must have a current sport’s physical on file with the school to play. Students who are new to the game are given a chance to learn the fundamentals and develop their skills over several years of practice and competition. Games and tournaments are held at other Lutheran schools throughout Chicagoland.
Basketball
Basketball is open to boys and girls in grades 5-6 in November and December and for 7-8 graders during January and February. A current physical on file at Grace is required to play. Students of all skill levels are welcome to join. Students are encouraged to develop and build their skills over the years. Games and tournaments are held at other Lutheran schools throughout Chicagoland.
Cheerleading
Cheerleading is open to students in grades 5-8. Students learn fundamental skills and a variety of cheers which they perform at basketball games throughout the November-February season. The team is led by Mrs. Giannotta and gives an introduction to the sport for students who may be interested in continuing with cheer, dance, or gymnastics in high school.
Girls on the Run - GOTR
Girls on the Run is offered each spring to grades 3-5 or grades 6-8, depending on interest. GOTR is an international organizational that provides a unique learning curriculum for each age group. The program teaches students about communication, health & wellness, and self-esteem while preparing the team of girls to run a 5K. The race consists of more than 5,000 runners in downtown Chicago, and takes place in late May or early June. Students pay $35 to the GOTR organization in order to participate. This fee covers snacks, lessons, and practice held twice per week from March-May, in addition to covering their transportation and fees for the GOTR 5K.
Track
Track is open to students in grade 5-8 and takes place in the spring. A current physical on file at Grace is required to participate.
The track season consists of a few after-school practices and a track meet that is held at Concordia University in River Forest. All schools in the Lutheran Schools League compete together.
