Elementary: 1st-4th Grade

1st & 2nd Grades

Teacher: Mrs. Arroz

Our Approach

First grade expects that students are ready to learn!  Students are expected to work hard and begin to practice time management skills which includes completing weekly homework packets. Students focus on their core subjects with Mrs. Arroz and have an individualized learning environment. A heavy emphasis on literacy and math skills helps students become confident learners and build a strong foundation for learning higher level skills in the future. Science, social studies, religion, and gym are also a big part of the curriculum in the afternoons.

Second grade helps students transition from learning to read to reading to learn.  Students continue to develop literacy and comprehension skills in order to use reading as a means to learn about other subjects. Second grade students strengthen their writing skills as a means of expressing their thoughts and ideas. Exploration, problem-solving, reading, and math skills are all put to use in the science and math curriculum as students continue to grow in each of these skill areas.

What sets our classroom apart:

  • FOCUS ON READING: Small group reading tailors books and activities to each child’s reading level. 5th grade reading buddies provide one-on-one attention to develop reading skills. The class also comes together to showcase skills during reader’s theater class plays.

  • PERSONAL EXPRESSION: Poetry portfolios, a class poetry slam, personal narrative storybooks, and persuasion letters presented to a real audience all challenge students to use writing as a means of expression.

  • INDIVIDUAIZED LEARNING: Grades 1 & 2 utilize the eSpark program on iPads that provides differentiated instruction in math and reading with fun videos and games at each student’s level.
  • LEARNING GOD’S TRUTH: Students are encouraged to grow in their faith through multiple fun ways of studying the Bible. They practice a weekly Bible verse by singing a song, acting out the verse, and drawing visualizations.

  • IMPROVING FOCUS: "Brain breaks" are a fun classroom tradition that give students an opportunity to get up and move around. Students are given a few minutes to dance and jump around to refresh their minds before a new lesson.

Our Approach

Grades 3 & 4 introduce students to combined classrooms, challenging students with greater independence over their learning. Individualized work serves to stretch students’ abilities in math and reading while they also begin to engage in critical thinking skills through a challenging science curriculum.

What sets our classroom apart:

  • FOCUS ON READING: Leveled reading groups help to ensure that students are being challenged to grow as readers based on their current reading abilities. Students read books in small groups at an appropriate level to encourage comprehension and a love of reading.

  • INDIVIDUAIZED LEARNING: Grades 3 & 4 utilize the eSpark program on iPads that provides differentiated instruction in math and reading with fun videos and games at each student’s level.

  • STEM IN THE CLASSROOM: The 3rd & 4th grade science curriculum incorporates several STEM projects that challenge students to work in groups as they design and build various contraptions to achieve a goal. Science skills are also demonstrated in individual projects presented each spring at the School Science Fair.

  • MUSIC: 3rd & 4th grade students learn to play recorders! They are given a chance to perform in front of the entire school and their families during the Christmas program in December.

  • CELEBRATING TOGETHER: The Christmas season is always an extra special time in 3rd & 4th grade with lots of decorations and holiday projects as well as daily Christmas stories and visits from the classroom elf, Claire.
Mrs. Segal, the 3rd and 4th grade teacher, sits at a table with two male and two female students. Mrs. Segal points at a paper on the table while smiling. The students hold books in their hands and concentrate on their work.
